One fateful day I asked if anyone in our party could see what some overhead signs said only to have my 4 1/2 yr. old niece turn to me with her hands rebelliously on her hips, saying, "you KNOW I can't read!!" After being chastised by the youngest member of our family I realized we had a problem that no one had picked up on: bright kid was getting frustrated which is never a good thing.
So I picked up Hooked on Phonics and my brother started working with her every night (became part of their nightly routine) and my niece started powering her way into the new world of language which she KNEW existed but hadn't been able to find the doorway to up until that time. Hooked on Phonics is over - they never finished it as she entered school, quickly surpassed her classmates reading level and currently is at a reading level 3-4 grades ahead her class. We certainly got more than our money back on this deal - took a kid that was about to run into trouble (frustration) and opened a doorway into a new world.
